Here's an image of a mitochondrian I referred to earlier (Wednesday, April 9). It's been known for some time that mitochondria have their own DNA, which is passed down through the mother only (with rare exceptions). There can be thousands of mitochondria in each of the trillions of cells of our bodies, making energy out of oxygen. More here.
