Today is the fourth anniversary of my son
Paul’s death, and I found myself wondering just how prevalent dying is among us
these days. According to Wolfram Alpha,
ten million people will have died in the US in these last four years. That’s a lot of grief, and I doubt such an
amazing number provides any solace for anyone, particularly for recent
bereavements. Ten million families, one
at a time. Forty-eight thousand people
dying every week, in this country alone, what a massacre! No wonder so much addiction to church,
synagog, and mosque. Otherwise, there’s
not much to fall back on, unless one is able to settle finally for a shrug and
say to oneself with conviction, “It is what it is, that’s how it works, that
indeed is how the Cookie Crumbles.”
