This head louse may or may not be conscious, but he certainly seems to know what he’s doing as he negotiates individual human hairs. If there’s consciousness here, I think it’s safe to assume it’s louse-consciousness, not just consciousness in general. Maybe kinds of consciousness are as varied as kinds of living beings: grasshopper-consciousness, horse-consciousness, human-consciousness…..which obviously is implicated in the creation of photographic and magnification technologies which make photographs like this one possible.
